What is Forensic Psychiatry?
Forensic psychiatry is the confluence of mental health and law. In both criminal and civil law, questions regarding mental health issues arise for which a Forensic Psychiatrist may provide answers to attorneys and to the courts.
As a Board Certified Forensic Psychiatrist, Dr. Cantu works with attorneys and the courts in evaluating an individual’s competency to stand trial, defenses based on mental disorders, and sentencing recommendations. Additionally, Dr. Cantu privately contracts in non-court-ordered situations such as custody disputes, workers’ compensation, supervisory negligence, disability discrimination, psychiatric evaluations and as well as several other examples (see a list of examples below).
